January 1 - December 31, 1967

(Box 5/Folder 7)

January 1, 1967

I taught my S.S. class & attended church. Communion service. Warm day melted much of the drifts. About half of my yard is now clean but the drifts are still deep near the alley. Had dinner with Schaefer sisters.

January 2, 1967

Really ill today for no reason I can imagine. Seems to be something I ate for supper yesterday.

January 3, 1967

Beautiful day. Drove to Guthrie Stillwater and with had luncheon with library staff. Backed out of crowded street on boys parking on Husband and struck a boy’s car & made a small dent. My insurance will pay for it. Drove to Guthrie & staying overnight with Grace G. Learning about the Job Corps situation.

January 4, 1967

Asked Grace questions and took notes, Left her house about ten. Stopped at Crescent to see Betty Adams. She has failed since I saw her last. In the afternoon. attended Women’s Fellowship at the church. Bright day. Most of the snow has melted off the fields. Drifts are still rather deep. Roads clear and dry. Went to see my beloved O’Neills re Job Corps. Pat said he would take me to Shawnee to see Tom Steed but I called and he has gone to Washington.

January 5, 196[7]

Washed this morning. Spent the P.M. writing to Tom Steed. I wish I could have talked with him. Pat (bless him) would have taken me to Shawnee. But I thought he would be in Washington and he was. Also tried to call Truman Richardson his administrative assistant and he was gone too. I called Dr. Scales for his advice and he said he would drive over to see me Saturday morning on his way to the City.

January 6, 1967

Mailed the letter to Tom Steed. Grace Goodman came up and we had another conference about the Guthrie Job Corps situation. Got a letter from Mr. Harrell of O.U. who needs outline & bibliography of my Indian hist. course next summer.

January 7, 1967

Worked hard on my course. Got it in shape, also the bibliography. Need to get in some biographical data. It melted some. All the snow is gone from my yard but some tiny spots where the deepest drift was.

January 8. 1967

Busy day. Taught my S.S. class (fine class) – heard a good sermon by Rev. Ralph. (He improves all the time.) In the P.M., Dr. & Mrs. Scales came – I had called them to discuss Job Corps. Worked some on my course & bib. In the evening I attended the Annual Meeting of our congregation at the church. There was a covered dish meal but I was too busy to attend that.

January 9, 1967

Finished my work on next summer’s plan for NDEA Institute and mailed it. Thought they had omitted all reference to me and so prepared some biographical data. In the evening after the mail had gone found a page was missing from the prospectus. They had not omitted mail but that page was gone. Small patches of snow still on my yard.

January 10, 1967

Called Dr. Herroll in much embarrassment & explained why I thought I had been left out of the prospectus. He was very nice – pleasant voice. I told him to ignore the biographical data I sent. Attended Club in the P.M. Very interesting. Saw a filmat at the schoolhouse showing water processing plant. Then Kenneth Orrell explained our own plant now in process of construction first the diagram, then by tour of plant.

January 11, 1967

Started on my course for next summer. I plan to write the lectures which I can possibly publish as a book later. This evening Roberta and Vernon Bostick took me to the school Xmas program postponed from the day of the blizzard. A tiny bit of my big drift remains. The weather is bright and pleasant but never very warm.

January 12, 1967

Worked on my course. Spent most of forenoon in library board meeting. We are at last close to the end of preparing the building for use. The last tiny spot of snow from my big drift finally melted. Warm day, but frost in the morning.

January 13, 1967

Another warm day – frost in the morning. Wesley Van Hanen set some rails by my front steps. Norman De Board [?] made them for me and Wesley was going to set them Dec. 22 but this was the first day since warm enough to pour cement. Wesley also took off some window casings and repaired some broken weight cords.

January 14, 1967

Worked some on my course but had several other things to do. Mr. & Mrs. Krause, who rent my farm, came to see me. They brought a check for some shale used on the road.

January 15, 1967

Taught my S.S. class and heard a sermon by Rev Ralph (pretty good sermon – he gets better all the time). In the afternoon wrote letters.

January 16, 1967

In the evening, Pat and Ramona came and showed pics of Rome. Worked on my course – Lecture 1. In the afternoon drove to Crescent to see Betty Adams. She has failed since I saw her before. Twice she shed tears for no particular reason except that she may be discouraged. I also called on Ida O’Neill and Winnie Shaefer at the rest home.

January 17, 1967

Sarah Baker came to help me and we (mainly Sarah) worked at cleaning the house and waxing the floors of the north north rooms. The work should have been done last fall but I didn’t find time. I am tired tonight.

January 18, 1967

Cleaned the south half and waxed the floors there. House all clean but gas range, which is petty dirty.

January 19, 1967

Sarah cleaned the gas range. I worked on Lecture 1. I hope it can be published as a book. Grace called me this evening about the Guthrie Job Corps. They are being investigated but it may be a whitewash.

January 20, 1967

I worked on Lecture 1. Went out to see the Friends in the afternoon. Robert Blaney changed the place of my breaker box so I can put another cupboard on the back parch to hold books. I have been giving books away because no more room for them.

January 21, 1967

Worked on Lecture 1. This is a hard one because I am trying to compress much information about tribes, life ways, etc. into small space.

January 22, 1967

Taught my S.S. class and heard a sermon by Rev. Ralph. In the P.M. wrote letters and visited the O’Neills, also visited the Friends- went out to get some early S.S. cards David Bernd has to use Monday. Alden Grassman called briefly – such a fine man.

January 23, 1967

Worked on a final draft of my church history. In the afternoon talked to the young confirmands about early history of our church. Rev. Ralph was away and he asked me to fill in by presenting that history. I didn’t do it very well but they are sweet kids.

January 24, 1967

Attended club at Della Clark’s. Good lesson about Southwest Center for Human Relations at the Uni. of Okla. I am acting as secy. and am also reporter so worked at that in the evening. Some lightning & thunder & wind this evening. It is raining a little.

January 25, 1967

It rained and snowed during the hard night. Some snow today. Rained hard and bad wind in some parts of the state. Continued snowing off and on today learned later we got .8 in. moisture. Not enough but some.

January 26, 1967

I worked on Lecture 1. It cleared off – no more moisture. I worked on my church history. Got it finished.

February 1, 1967

It is raining at bedtime. Didn’t accomplish much on Lecture 2. Can’t quite get started. Pat O’Neill and I think Loren Olmstead and John Hammer drove to Stillwater and got the books Mable Caldwell is donating to our library in memory of Stanley Olmstead.

February 6, 1967

I spent the day in Stillwater – luncheon with the library staff, some work in the library on my course, and I took my church history to Dr. Sales, who is going to have 100 copies made for us at a small expense. Very cold.

February 7, 1967

Miltia Hill called me from Drumright. I have not seen her for 32 years. She asked me to meet her at Perkins as she passed thru on her way to Shawnee. I drove over there in the P.M. – visited her about ½ hour (she is the same beloved Miltia. I got home at 6:20, not very dark. I suppose she reached Shawnee about the same time.

February 8, 1967

We put in a good day’s work at the library cataloging the new books. We accomplished a lot. Mabel Bryson; Thelma Ficken, Eva dean Huffer, June Leathers, Jackie Noonan, Elnora Cassaday, Winnie Branen, Madonna Enmeier, and I. Such a hardworking, efficient group. We got a surprising amount done.

February 9, 1967

Worked on Lecture 2 this morning. (My mornings are short because I get up so late.) In the afternoon went to Stillwater to visit Ruth Hammond. I took her to sup dinner and she took me to the Okla. City Symphony concert. Very pleasant visit with Ruth.

Worked all day at the library with Ramona O’Neill. We got a lot done. Tomorrow several women will work there shelving the books. We have them all cataloged except some National Geographic magazines.

February 16, 1967

Snowed all day lightly. Ground white this evening. Probably not much moisture fell but it will do some good. I worked all day on Lecture 2, Only Ramona and Winnie worked at the library. That is more than their share. I will help them tomorrow.

February 17, 1967 (PAGE24)

Worked all morning at the library with Ramona and Winnie. We got everything done, all the books shelved. It is wonderful. We are proud and happy. Went to Enid with Winnie Branen, Esther Simones, Lillian Proctor & Marie Mitchell to see “My Fair Lady” by a Phillips Uni. Cast. Good.

February 18, 1967

Sleepy today. Got in last night at 12:30. The musical comedy was very well done by a Phillips student cast. Later – my dear friend Carolyn Thomas Foreman died this day. I learned of it much later.

February 22, 1967

Worked a little on Chapter 2. Then at 12:40 left for Guthrie with two carloads of church and club women to visit the Job Corps. Of course didn’t learn anything but thought I was obligated to go.

February 23, 1967

Had good S.S. c Worked all day writing letters to people trying to get investigation of Job Corps. My visit yesterday had no effect on my real attitude. I went only because I could hardly refuse. But these guided tours are carefully planned.

February 25, 1967

Was tired today but had a good S.S. class and attended church. In the P.M. watched some better than usual TV programs and wrote letters.

February 27, 1967

Worked on Lecture 3. This evening I saw the most beautiful and moving programs I ever saw – “Ivan Ivanovich,” the everyday life of a family in an industrial city on the Don in USSR. No propaganda either American or Russian – just simple human life.

February 28, 1967

Attended a fine meeting of Library Board at library. Made plans for open house March 19. We all have much work to do. In the p.m. I forgot about club and went to Enid and bought a cabinet to put on my back porch to hold overflow books.

February 29, 1967

Worked on Lecture 3 except when I worked on library plans.

March 1, 1967

Worked on Chapter 3 except when I was called to discuss library plans, I really get little time for writing. No wonder I am so slow.

March 2, 1967

Spent the evening at John Hammers, where John, Bob Schaefer, and I as a committee and Loren & Eula Ruth Olmstead and Glendora Hammer made out a list of beautiful books to buy with the $179.26 given in lieu of flowers when Stanley Olmstead was shot down in Viet Nam.

March 3, 1967

I suppose I worked on Lecture 3. I am writing late.

March 7, 1967

March 8 Went to Women’s Fellowship at the church in the P.M. A man was there from Ghana. Very fine. In the evening, he spoke to the congregation. I took my projector and operated it for him. He has fine slides. Ground covered with snow this morning. Thermometer at zero.

March 8, 1967

March 9 Worked most of the day on Chapt. 3. At 3:00 P.M. Eula Ruth Olmstead took me to the Thompson book store at Edmond and we finished buying & ordering books for the present. We saved a little of the 179.26 for the future.

March 9, 1967

March 10 Finished Lecture 3, only it must be copied revised and copied. It is too long.

March 10, 1967

March 11 Terribly grieved to learn John Hammer died suddenly this afternoon. I had such a happy evening at their home only a week ago. I hav I can think of nothing else. Of how much I shall miss John, of Glendora and those fine little boys.

March 11, 1967

March 12 I can’t get the Hammer family off my mind. Of how Glendora and the boys must be thinking – how last Sunday they all went to church together, of how bright yesterday started for them, of how everything is changed forever. I taught my S.S. class & attended church, wrote letters in the afternoon. March 12, 1967.

March 13, 1967

I worked some on Lecture 3 but I have so many interruptions. I actually get very little done. Nobody can write and be an average citizen.

March 14, 1967

John Hammer was buried today. I did not attend the funeral. I preferred to think of his as I saw him last or as I heard his voice over the telephone the day before he died. I would have gone to show my respect and sympathy only knew the church couldn’t hold all the congregation.

March 18, 1967

It turned very cold last night. I had turned my furnace off before I left home and when I got back the thermometer in the house was down to 40°. I spent most of the day thawing out. Put some last finishing touches on Lecture 3.

March 19, 1967

Conducted the most beautiful confirmation service I ever attended. In the P.M. we had our library open house- 103 were there. It was a grand success. If only John Hammer had been there. The building was filled with pots of flowers from his funeral. It rained some.

March 20, 1967

It rained only .3 inch yesterday but better than none. Grace Goodman came to give me more specific information about the job corps. I went out to see poor heartbroken Glendora. She is very brave. It makes me sad to read the entry above.

We had a nice shower this morning but not enough. At least I think it was March 31. It might have been April 1. I am writing late.

April 1, 1967

Nothing much happened. I got my hair washed and set and spent the next of the time working on Lecture 5. My lilac is blooming nicely. I found a good boy to help me in the yard – Ronnie Smith.

Attended club at Madonna’s. Very fine program on folk music by Maxine Harak. The wheat has come out wonderfully since the rain – quite a change from a week ago today.

April 26, 1967

My peonies are in bloom – also my iris, old fashioned yellow rose, and my red clematis just beginning. The weather really seems like spring since the rain.

April 27, 1967

Dorine and Burton called. Dorine’s father died last night. He was old and had been mentally confused for a long time – was in a coma the last two weeks.

April 28, 1967

I have been working on my course and neglecting my diary. I am finally getting so I can see a prospect of getting the course organized in time to give it when the time comes. I have quit writing out the lectures – just collecting material and planning them.

April 29, 1967

One day this week I learned that Dr. Scales is going to leave Okla. to accept the presidency of Wake Forst Forest College. I am very sad about it for he and Mrs. Scales are among my favorite people.

April 30, 1967

I thought only 2 or 3 would be at church but we had an average attendance. I taught my S.S. class. A student from Phillips preached because Rev Ralph is away. In the afternoon I drove to Stillwater to stay overnight with the Howlands. Mary Graves the and the Rogsdons here also. We went to see Cherrie Garret who is convalescing from a leg amputation. Marguerite showed her European slides.

May 1, 1967

I worked at the library in the morning then I showed Africa pictures at the staff luncheon. Worked some more in the library. Then went to town and brought a dress – cost $18. Soon after I came home, Grace Goodman and another friend came from Guthrie. They think there is an investigation of the Job Corps. I hope so.

May 2, 1967

Working hard on my course. My peonies are blooming – also the rose on my porch trellis, my late iris, and my red clematis. Oh yes, and roses.

May 5, 1967

It rained hard this morning and again this afternoon. I am sure it adds up to 3 inches, probably more. We are all very happy about it – even though this is the Tri-State Band Festival at Enid. Later – it was 3½.

May 9, 1967

The club met at my house and I showed my Africa pictures. Mrs. Stuerke was with us. We decided to spend our $50 on the library. Jane Vaverka gave me a beautiful African violet.

I am still working so hard on my course. I miss most of the entries. I am greatly distressed about our war in Viet Nam.

May 13, 1967

It rained last night and most of the day but not hard. I drove to Stillwater in late afternoon for a library staff dinner in honor of Mr. & Mrs. Low. He has reached the retirement age (65) and will be teaching library science at the Uni. Of Mich. It will be impossible to fill his place at OSU. This is one time when the retirement rule is a misfortune. I am staying with the Howlands. Had a migraine attack this evening.

May 14, 1967

Slept well and am not much worse for my migraine attack last evening. I’m glad it didn’t happen while I was driving over here. We had a bad hail in Stillwater last night but it covered a small area. I attended S.S. and church with the Howlands. Drove back in early afternoon.

May 21, 1967

I had a migraine attack during the night. This was the day of our church picnic. The day was bright and cool and everything was beautiful and I always enjoy that outdoor service so much but I stayed at home and rested this morning for I wanted to attend a reception for the Lows at Stillwater this P.M. I did and it was a perfect occasion.

May 22, 1967

I worked on my course. I am at the place now where I can see the end. And so I decided to make a reservation for the alumni reunion and to attend the club picnic tomorrow. Ferrol Butts called. My lilies are lovely.

May 23, 1967

I attended our woman’s club annual picnic at Will Rogers Park at O.C. The day was pleasant and we enjoyed it very much. We came close to a serious accident. A truck turned out of its lane and came straight towards us. Probably the driver fell asleep. Ramona blew the horn and he pulled back. It would have been a head-on collision.

May 27, 1967

I kept the library in the P.M. It is a great satisfaction to see that good library – the building is attractive and our book collection is fine.

May 28, 1967

I taught my S.S. class and attended church. Rev. Ralph preached a fine sermon. He gets better all the time. In the P.M. some church youths came by to get my contribution to CROP. Nice boys – Mike Phelan and Sammy Vogel. Then I went to the cemetery and decorated the graves. A little sprinkle and much thunder last night.

May 29, 1967

We had our Marshall High School alumni reunion this evening. I am a member of the first class – 1913. I was the only one there though seven of us are living. We had a very happy time – banquet program, meeting old friends. We have these reunions every two years. I worked on my course.

May 30, 1967

One lovely regal lily was blooming – the rest not blooming yet. I drove up to the cemetery and put it on my parents’ grave. Ralph came & had dinner with me. We had two hard showers in the P.M. – about 2 in. – and we needed them. I spent the evening and had supper with my beloved young O’Neills. I worked some on my course.

May 31, 1967

I finished the course and started packing. Lovely bright cool day after the rain.

June 1, 1967

It rained again last night. I did a little pa packing but I was about ill most of the day. Grace Goodman called. I don’t think they will ever clean up that Job Corps at Guthrie.

June 2, 1967

I worked hard at packing and got it all done. Cloudy day.

June 3, 1967

Loaded my car, paid my bills, saw a number of people about this and that, closed my house, and drove to Norman. The traffic was heavy and I got tired. Staying at a crummy motel. Bright day. Cold in morning but got warm in P.M.

June 4, 1967

Rested in the motel this morning. Then came to the dormitory when it opened at one. A Mr. Gregory helped me unload and carry things to my room. Lovely dorm. I unpacked & went to a dinner at the Student Union for the participants in the Institute. Lovely time.

June 5, 1967

Had a happy day with my teaching job. Badly worried about Israel. The war started today and the combination against that little state is frightening – though the Israelis don’t seem frightened. Some Arabs have a real grievance, but not Nasser who is doing it just to increase his prestige.

June 6, 1967

Another good day at my teaching. And the Arabs are so badly whipped they are claiming the U.S. bombed them – not even an intelligent lie. I spent the evening listening to UN proceedings. The Security Council voted a cease fire with the Israelis victorious on all fronts.

June 7, 1967

Our reunion took a bus tour to Gilcrease Museum today. Got back in time to hear TV broadcast with news of cease fire between Israel and UAR and Jordan – not Syria yet. I have never known of such a dramatic defeat as Nasser got – and how he deserved it. Perhaps this was June 8.

June 8, 1967

Another good day with my students. And cease fire between Israel and Syria. I don’t sympathize with Syria or Nasser but I do sympathize with King Hussain. I believe this cease fire was June 9.

June 9, 1967

My class did not meet today – does not meet on Fridays. I spent the day grading reading reports. The group is doing fine work.

June 10, 1967

June 11, 1967

Didn’t attend church because I wanted to hear the Israeli general (forget his name) Dayan on TV. Tornadoes all around. Much damage to wheat yesterday around Kingfisher yesterday. Also yesterday a family killed near Hammond. Today it passed close to us but funnels dipped only at Prague. Nobody killed.

June 12, 1967

Our classes did not meet today because Wednesday’s tour is being held on Sat. I worked on my uncompleted lectures, which I outlined but didn’t write out fully last spring.
